“A Very Powerful Testimony on Misunderstanding the Nature of God"

In our previous blog post we shared how many people we have seen over our 25 years of counseling have had misunderstandings on the nature of God. We also shared how this can develop and some resources that might be helpful in dealing with this important issue.

A Little Background

We attend NewSpring Church in Greenville, SC, one of 13 NewSpring campuses across South Carolina. All messages are broadcast from the Anderson campus and the current focus is on the Book of Romans. Brad Cooper, one of the lead pastors, was sharing on hope from Romans, Chapter 5, with this message entitled “Champions of Hope.”

A Very Powerful Testimony

During this message, Pastor Brad shared a video of a 5- minute testimony from Hannah Myers, who attends the Powdersville, SC campus. This very vulnerable and powerful testimony includes how we can develop misunderstandings about the nature of God and how that can start developing when we are children. As a result of these misunderstandings (or lies) about God, our subsequent decisions can result in leading us down sinful paths that we greatly regret.

Not the End of the Story

Thank God we don’t have to live from our past sins and regrets. We don’t have to experience the guilt and shame forever. Jesus came, and through His death and resurrection, we can heal and ultimately experience His grace and forgiveness and live from a place of freedom. However, we have to come to a place where we lay our lives before Him and place our faith and trust in Him. We can then receive His “Justification,” a theological term that really can be translated, “Just as if I’ve Never Sinned!”

By the way, one of the things we would often do when we were counseling would be to have the counselee write a letter to the child within and then read it out loud. You will see that Hannah did just that in her sharing.
