"Counseling--Powerful Moments of Connection"

(In a prior Post, “Things We Have Observed from Counseling Others For 25 Years," we indicated that we would be sharing some things that we had observed that were common to many individuals or couples. This writing addresses one of those items. If you would like to read our initial Post mentioned above, you can go HERE.)

The Importance of Powerful Moments of Connection

Over the course of counseling hundreds of people, we have observed that there is often a point in the process when a “connection” or an “aha moment” occurs. These are extremely important because the issue being addressed moves from “the head to the heart,” and it is often then that deeper healing can occur.

A Personal Moment of Connection

For example, when I (Jerry) started receiving pastoral counseling many years ago, the counselor introduced a concept that I had never considered previously. It had to do with a type of wounding that was associated with my mother, and at first, I was extremely skeptical. After reading materials provided by the counselor, praying, and processing privately this issue with the counselor, there was a point in time that it “clicked.” In other words, it was no longer just an intellectual concept but it connected emotionally with me. This started a powerful process that involved various healing components (i.e., realizing the impact of the wound, grieving and eventually forgiveness, acceptance and changes in my behavior regarding this issue).

Knowing in Advance What to Expect

Not all types of counseling will address the deeper or “root issues,” but may focus primarily on changing a specific type of behavior. When we counseled an individual or even a couple, our focus was on identifying the deeper cause(s) of the issue. When people would call us prior to scheduling to discuss our counseling approach, we would be very clear regarding our focus on identifying the cause(s) of the deeper wound(s) in order to bring healing to those areas. We would also mention that we will include resources to help change dysfunctional behaviors, but that would not be our major focus.

Ways to Find Moments of Connection

The first step in experiencing a deep, heart-related connection for healing is to recognize what might have happened to you—especially in your developmental years—and how that may have affected you. Connecting with an insightful counselor is optimal, but there are also many resources available to help. Our book, The Missing Commandment: Love Yourself, is one of these resources.  We have included two chapters from our book that might be particularly helpful. You can find these HERE. Blessings,
